FROM THE CONTEMPORARY LOCAL NEWSPAPERS OF NORTH BUCKS (BUCKS STANDARD, NORTH BUCKS TIMES, WOLVERTON EXPRESS)
With today’s internet a wealth of official information is available regarding those who served.
In an age before local radio and television, families often allowed letters to be published in the local press from their loved ones on active service.
However, for their descendants the letters reveal a more personal aspect, graphically describing the experience of the people and providing an insight into their personalities.

NBT 1917 June 26th Tue.

Private Percy Heady, of the Lincolnshire Regiment, has been killed in action. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Heady, to whom his Company Sergeant Major writes;

“We were being shelled whilst in the trenches, and Percy was instantaneously killed in the afternoon. The same night he was buried with another of our lads, and a small cross with names denotes the place. I was present at the burial, and a short service was held by one of our officers. I have known Percy since he joined the battalion. We have all been delighted with his unassuming and gentlemanly ways. His devotion to his duty was most marked and helped him carry out work from which many would shrink, for a stretcher bearer‘s work is not always pleasant. I was frequently in his company, and I look upon him as a staunch friend, and I shall miss him very much indeed. I lost my brother recently and know what this loss will mean to you, a parent. Great sacrifices are daily being made. We must hope that some day the full meaning of all this will be shown us, and in the meantime we must remember that he has given his life in carrying out what we all believe to be right and just. Percy’s labour is finished, his life completed, but the remembrance of such a noble lad will live in the minds of his fellow comrades.
