The Rector of Great Horwood, the Reverend John Chevalier, was a first cousin of Lord Kitchener. He died in 1917 from concussion of the brain, following an accident at Giggleswick School, Yorks., where he had taken a mastership of National Service. On June 4th he had officiated at the marriage of his only daughter Rose and the Reverend Walter St. John Lindars, curate of St. Paul’s, Bedford. The bride was given away by her uncle, Captain Barrington Chevalier, and a reception was held after the service in the schoolroom, with the honeymoon being spent in Ely.

On a farm at Great Horwood, in August 1917 two members of the Women’s Land Army milked 17 cows between them every night and morning, besides taking their full share in the farm work.
