A few youths and young chaps in the various workshops in the Carriage Works decided one morning that they’d join up and they got together, then they shouted and shouted, then they went into the next workshop and the next one until they’d got a little group of about 20 or 30 of them then they went, come out of the Works and went across and all joined up. The same thing happened the next day, then the next day till there was about two or three hundred from all round the Works, then the Railway put on a special train, took us all to Oxford. When we got to Oxford they were flabbergasted up at Cowley Barracks, they were flabbergasted, they couldn’t do anything with us at all. We had to find our own bed and breakfast in Oxford and pay for it ourselves.
