No, terrible. Nothing’s worth it. Why is any of it worth it? Just because a few politicians fall out over power; political power and a bit of land they gain and they use the people on that bit of land as pawns. Worthwhile? No! Why was it worth while? The only worthwhile part was that we prevented the Germans from coming and taking our country. When you come home everything was all ruined. You couldn’t buy anything, we was rationed, rationing and everything else, you couldn’t get anything at all....I was out of work, and ‘thank you very much’, that’s all it was, there...I expect it turned me politically I expect, it turned me socialist you see... I certainly thought that power was wrong, political power and money and the country and the world being run by people that had got the wherewithal and the rest were nowhere. (Frank Gillard)

There’s always got to be a point where you’ve got to make a stand and we had to make a stand with France against Germany who were, well, they would, the Germans in those days was out for expansion and they’d have been right down probably into France and that’s the way they were going. See, they were led by a maniac and had to be checked and, course it was a good thing it was checked but - course they was ruthless people and they was well-equipped.( Sid Coles)

I wrote a message...to place on a grave on a memorial on the Somme of an old friend of mine that was killed... and what I wrote was, ‘Sleep well comrades, you held your heads high with pride, but now they would bow in shame, as all that is left are memories.( Hawtin Mundy)
