The Terriers arrived at their camping ground in the afternoon and started to make things ship-shape. Their tented town became home to them during the evening and the pleasant fraternal spirit broke out in numberless ways. At “Lights Out” they settled down to a snooze as though they had been there a month, and the shadow of war was a chimera. While they slept the great spirit of war was again busy. About 2 they tumbled out of their blankets wondering what on earth was wrong. They were soon enlightened. Those terrible flames and universal war conflagration had defied the waters of diplomacy and because of the pride and greed of one great nation, all Europe was to be thrown into a bitter war. Our Terriers learnt that they were to entrain back to Wolverton and await orders there. None of them were to leave the town. Mobilization was imminent. They arrived back in Wolverton on Monday afternoon and the order was given to keep in touch with Headquarters. |
