Budgeting

Over-Budgeting– Stewart Brand suggests that planners should allow more to be spent on the basic structure, though not on the finishing, than the bare minimum. This flies in the face of modern developments, where often the flimsiest of structures are tarted up with the flashiest of superficial decoration! It seems clear, though, that the bungalows, whose design was driven by the need to attract the professionals and managers the Development Corporation needed for its own ranks, that at least some of the specifications spared no cost. Where these potential customers often had experience in the field, the solidity of the structures and the sophistication of the basic (H-shape) design – as well as all the other leading edge architectural ideas incorporated – paid dividends in that they were a major selling points. Once more, though, this may be a luxury open to few developers in future!
