15. The Porch

Some front doors open directly onto the street, however many house have porches. These may be no more than projecting painted wood porch hoods on carved wood or stone brackets.

Recessed porches, where the front door is set back, are common and many have retained their decorative tiled floors. There are a great variety of patterns to be found in Wolverton porches, from simple checkerboard patterns to complicated encaustic tile designs (reminiscent of the floors of the public areas in the Houses of Parliament!).

The doorstep or threshold is almost invariably of York stone. These were often painted with “Mansion House red” and polished by housewives who vied with each other to keep the smartest house!
