22. Cellars

Coalhole cover, Church Street

Some houses have cellars with windows in trenches under ground level facing either the street or the back garden. These are protected by cast-iron lattice or thick glass covers. Cast iron or heavy glass coalhole covers can be found in the pavement by some houses.
