23. Different Houses

Stratford Road

Walking around Wolverton, you will see a few houses, which do not fit the more common designs. In Oxford Street there are some unusual houses, (numbers 6 – 28), built of red brick, but with Dutch gables. In Bedford Street there are a few houses with original rendering that resembles stonework. One or two houses have oriel windows, a projecting bay, at first floor level on their back elevation. Some, such as The Elms in Green Lane, show Arts & Crafts influence. The Ark has a plain tiled roof combined with decorated tiles to small gables and casement windows. On Stratford Road there are a number of imposing terraced houses with ornate gables and highly decorated porches. From the early 1900 until the 1920s, number 51 was the North Buckinghamshire Private Hospital and School of Midwifery.
