Olney Centre, High Street, Olney MK46 4EF

Speaker: Julian Hunt – Local historian and well known local speaker.

Julian will take us through the recognisable architectural features of the coaching inns. They were usually quite grand with an obvious coach entrance, which in the early days was quite low as nobody then sat on top of the coach. Of course they also had a large number of stables with space for the grooms, etc. to sleep.

Posting inns hired out horses to those with their own coaches as the horses would need replacing after travelling some distance. A post boy would travel with the coach to its next stop in order to bring the horses back.

The coming of the railways in the 1840s however spelt the death knell for coaching inns.

All welcome. Visitors: £3.00 per meeting.
