Rainbow Estate

Dated Oct 10th 1689 LEASE FOR A YEAR 1689 between Francis Parrett of Castle Throp lacemaker and Frances of the one part and Thomas Salmon of Castle Throp aforesaid labourer of the other part. That they the said Francis Parrett and Frances his wife For and in consideration of the sum of 5 shillings paid by the said Thomas Salmon att or before then sealing and delivering of those .all that cottage or tenement in Castle Throp now in the occupation of Thomas Salmon with a barn orchard and close and commons for 6 sheep 2 cows and 2 bullocks to the said cottage and tenement belonging to hold from the day before the date hereof for dwelling and until the full and term of one whole year from the rent or sum of 1p at the feast of St Michaell The said Thomas Salmon may be in the actual possession

11TH DAY OF October 1689 RECEIVED then and had of the within name Thomas Salmon the sum of thirty and five pounds in full payment discharge and satisfaction of the consideration money mentioned in this within written indenture witnesses John Newman T? Arnold J. Pomfrett his mark of Francis Parrett and Frances Parrett.

7th January 1719 Thomas Salmon and Jane his wife to Robert Shreive of Castlethorpe aforesaid and Mary his wife our daughter all that messuage cottage or tenement situate standing and being in Castlethorpe and now in their possession. With all yards gardens orchard cart sheds buildings wayes within seven years last past before the date hereof. And is adjoining to the now dwelling house of us the said Thomas Salmon and Jane his wife.

I give and devise unto my loving Grandson John Ambledine of Castlethrup in the County aforesaid all that house or Tenement I now Dwell in Situate and Standing and being in Castlethrup aforesaid together with all Yarns Stables outhouses Yards and Backsides Commons profits and Commodities whatsoever to the same belonging or in any wayes appertaining To have and to hold the said house premises to him the said John Ambledine and his heirs forever Item I give and devise to my Loving Grandson John Ambledine all that my house or tenement now in the Tenure or Occupation of my son in Law Robert Shreeve Situate Standing and being in Castlethrup aforesaid Together with all Yards Barns Stables backsides outhouses and appurtenances whatsoever to the same belonging or anywayes appertaining To have and to hold the same to my said Grandson his heirs and Assigns for ever

William Swannell to Robert Leason mortgage of premises in Castlethorpe between William Swannell of Castle Thrup Butcher and Mary his wife and Robert Leason of Harpole Yeoman All that upper part of the cottage and tenement situate standing and being in Castle Thrup from a joint in the wall to a post in the palemounded over cross in the yard on the east side of the said cottage or (tenement containing in breadth eight feet or thereabouts and also all that yard shop and barn on the west side of the cottage or tenement all which said premises late were in the tenure or occupation of Joseph Swannell now of Mary Swannell widow of the said Joseph Swannell.
To have and to hold the upper part of the cottage or tenement etc. Unto the said Robert Leason. Rent of one peppercorn on the Feast Day of St Michael the Archangel. In consideration of £100 to the said John Bull paid by the said William Swannell and Mary his wife and also in consideration of ten shillings to the said John Bull in hand paid by the said Thomas Niccolls and John Niccolls the said John Bull All that cottage etc. formerly in the occupation of William Gardener late of John Bull and now in the tenure of Benjamin Churchill and adjoining to a tenement formerly in the possession of William Harris and purchased by John Newman. To the use of the said Mary the wife of the said William Swannell for life and from and after her decease To the use of Mary Johnson (Daughter of the said Mary Swannell by Thomas Johnson her former husband deceased.

Signed sealed and delivered in the presence of Thomas Grammer and Benjamin Churchill. All that Cottage Yard etc. the said recited of the said Benjamin Churchill his assigns. Bought and purchased by Thomas Watts deceased Father of John Watts of Newton Longville bearing the date 20th & 21st days of April 1669 and were by him the said John Watts and Alice his wife sold and conveyed to the said John Bull by Indenture bearing the date on or about the 20th day of February 1763 for 1,000 years Yielding and paying yearly and every year during the term hereby granted unto John Swannell and Mary Swannell the rent of one pepper corn on the Feast Day of Saint Michael the Archangel (if demanded).

William Shrieve to Wm Foster between Wm Shrieve sometime since of Newport Pagnell and now of Aspley Guise shepherd (son and heir of Wm Shreive formerly of Cosgrove Yeoman deceased, who was the son and heir of Wm Shreive heretofore of Newton Longueville Yeoman also deceased; which said last named Wm Shreive was brother and heir of Robert Shreive long time since of Castle Throp Yeoman likewise deceased and which said Robert Shreive survived Mary his wife leaving by her issue a daughter who is since also deceased without issue living) of the one part And Wm Foster of Castle Thorp labourer of the other part. In consideration £6 6shillings to Wm. Shreive. The said messuage and tenement was formerly erected and built but which hath long since fallen or been taken down formerly in the occupation of the said Robert Shreive and Mary his wife. But since of Philip Osborne which was on 7th January 1719 granted by one Thomas Salmon and Jane his wife unto the said Robert Shreive and Mary his wife for their natural life. On 26 March 1798 possession was taken by Wm Compton (as attorney for Wm Shreive) witnessed by mark of Wm Nickels signed Wm Newbery.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Thomas Kitelee of Castle Thorpe in the County of Bucks Gent which I make in manner following that is to say I give and devise unto my Son Richard Kitelee all and every my Messuages Cottages Closes Lands Tenements Heredits and Real Estate situate and being at Castle Thorpe aforesaid and at Hanslopp in the said County of Bucks with their and every of their Appurts To hold the value unto my said Son Richard Kitelee his heirs and Assigns for ever Subject Nevertheless to be charged and chargeable with the Payment of one Annuity or money Rent charge of one hundred and fifty pounds unto my daughter Jane the wife of Robert Scott for and during the term of her natural life by even and equal half yearly payments at Lady Day and Michaelmas and the first payment thereof to begin and be made on such of the said days as shall first and next happen after my decease and which said Annuity or yearly sum of one hundred and fifty pounds I devise shall be paid and payable unto the proper hands of my said daughter above separate and altogether apart from the said Robert Scott or any other Husband or Husbands she may hereafter happen to Marry

Mr John Rainbow to Mr. John Rooker Rainbow

[In 1840, the year that Rowland Hill introduced the postage stamp, a licence was granted for the sale of stamps in the village. Four years later on January 16, 1844, Mr. John Rooker Rainbow became Castlethorpe’s first postmaster.
The post office was in a small cottage in The Gardens yard and it remained here for some time. Unfortunately Mr. Rainbow died shortly after taking office and by November his widow Mrs. Rebecca Rainbow, had been appointed in his stead.
After a time she moved to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Rainbow, at Post Office near the School.
At her death the postmastership was transferred to Mr. Rainbow in name only, the work being carried on by his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Elizabeth Jane.]

This Conveyance is made the twenty eight day of July One Thousand and Sixty-Four Between Elizabeth Gobbey of Castlethorpe in the County of Buckingham the wife of Joseph Edwin Gobbey (hereinafter called "the Vendor")

1. ALL THAT freehold cottage with the yard garden and appurtenances thereto belonging situate at Castlethorpe in the said County of Buckingham formerly used as the Sub Post Office and now known as 16 North Street Castlethorpe aforesaid All which said property comprised part of premises once called or known by the name of The King's Arms but subseqeuently converted into a private dwellinghouse and included in a Conveyance dated the Sixth day of May One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy-Nine and made between William Nicholls Bull and Joseph Thomas Bull of the one part and William George Rainbow of the other part
