Castlethorpe people celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the King and Queen with characteristic loyalty. The children received badges to commemorate the occasion, the whole village joined in a united service of thanksgiving, and for the rest of the day gave themselves over to the enjoyment of the many attractions provided. A splendid scheme of decoration had been carried out, for which prizes were offered, these bring awarded to Mrs. Gobbey, Miss Buxton and Mr. J. Cowley in that order.

A popular attraction was the fancy dress parade held in the afternoon. It was headed by Miss Ann Whiting, dressed as “Jubilee,” and at the rear of the procession - an impressive affair - was Miss Pat Whiting riding her horse, which was very cleverly dressed as a bookmaker, complete with trousers and the proverbial long cigar, and attached to its back was a label. “The Old Firm.” The fancy dress characters were judged by Mrs. E. Whiting and Mr. B. Whiting, and their decisions gave every satisfaction. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Whiting took a very active interest in the proceedings and did not spare themselves in helping to make the day a memorable one.

They placed a field at the disposal of the committee for the children’s and adult’s sports, and here the whole village made merry for several hours. Mr. and Mrs. Whiting presented Jubilee mugs to the children which they used at the excellent and ample tea which had been provided for them. Mrs. Furness provided a band from the village musicians, which was exceedingly good. They played during tea and for dancing. In the evening there was a firework display and a huge bonfire brought the happy day to a close. Messrs. H. Cook & H. Clarke were chairman and vice-chairman of the representative committee, and Mr. R. West carried out the secretarial duties very ably.
