Castlethorpe Cricket 1820 - 1898

Northampton Mercury 30 September 1820

On Monday the 18th inst. A Grand Cricket Match was played, between eleven gentlemen amateurs Cosgrove, this county, against eleven gentlemen amateurs of Castle Thorp, in the county of  Buckingham, for a considerable sum money; after a most severe and well contested game (in which individual and collective talent shone conspicuously), the former proved victorious. The ascension of Lunardi, in his balloon, some years since, collected an immense concourse, but the number of the spectators this occasion the exceeds the power of the pen to describes.—This well-contested match was decided in favour Cosgrove, by four runs only.

Northampton Mercury 01 October 1836

On Thursday week a match of cricket was played at Castle Thorpe between the married and single of that place. It was won by the latter, who had nine wickets to down. The party then adjourned to the King's Arms, and partook of an excellent dinner, and the evening was spent with great hilarity.

The bowling of George Herbert and Edward York for the Hanslope team, and Josiah Compton and Andrew Nicholls for the Castlethorpe team, was good, and so was the batting of William and Edward York, of the Hanslope side, and Andrew Nicholls and J. Dr. McGachen’s side won easily.

Cricket.—An interesting cricket match took place on Saturday between the married and single members of the Castlethorpe Cricket Club. The married went to the wicket first, and made 67 runs. The single contributed 47, the married thus winning the first innings 20 runs. In their second attempt the married were not so successful, and only scored runs. The single members made 31 for the loss of three wickets, when time was called. A most pleasant afternoon was spent, this being the first cricket match of the kind in this village for least 20 years.

CRICKET CLUB. The annual gathering of this club was held on Saturday last, September 21, in the Carrington School, when over 40 members and friends sat down to a meat tea. During the evening Capt. H. M. Williams kindly occupied the chair, and much of the success of the gathering was due to this gentleman. Mr. Brearley, the secretary and treasurer, gave a short resumé of the club’s doings during the season. Nine matches had been played, 4 won, 5 lost, with two games played between teams selected by the captain (J. West), and vice-captain (G. I. Coey) respectively. The club was on the right side in its finance. Members and friends contributed songs, &c., and the evening passed most pleasantly, many expressing a wish to have similar “socials” more frequently. A vote of thanks was accorded to those who had given substantial help to the club, and to Mr. Whiting for the use of his
fields. Among the many friends present may be mentioned Mr. J. Pike (District Councillor), Mr. C. Whiting (Parish Councillor and Member of School Board), Mr. J. Olney (chairman of the parish Council) Messrs. Luing, Rainbow, and D. Cowley (Parish Councillors), together with Messrs. Pain, Greenwood, Compton, F. Amos, H. Cowley, and E. Powell. The services of Captain Williams in the chair were much appreciated.
