1st HANSLOPE

Sunday July 16th 1989

Milton Keynes North District Cub Scout Sports

At Bushfield School Wolverton at 2.0pm

1st Hanslope Cub Scouts & Leaders

We all assembled at 1.0pm for the final pep talk and the Cub Scouts departed for Wolverton eager to do their utmost so that the Pack could retain the Shield.

Arriving at Wolverton we saw Bagheera and Mr. Smith engaged in helping the District Team run the Sports. After learning that 7 Packs would be competing against us and that most races would not have heats and the first six places would earn points, we entered the fray.

From the start it could be seen that our lads meant business and points were steadily gained in fact in only one event in the whole programme did we fail to achieve any points. In the Egg and Spoon and Potato Race we swept all competition aside wining the four races for the age groups. A new event had been included for the first time for many years which was the Tug of War. Our eight heavyweights contested to the full and managed runners up position in a very keen competition.

We awaited the final results from Paul Swannell ADC Cub Scouts, knowing in our hearts that the team had given everything in their quest to retain the Shield, encouraged to the full by our usual vocal parental support. Paul announced the final placings in reverse order. 4th Newport Fifth, 55 points; 3rd Wolverton Praries, 60 pts; 2nd Newport Invincibles, 67pts; and in FIRST PLACE 1st Hanslope, 108 points.

The whole team and supporters were overwhelmed by another fantastic achievement in retaining the Shield for the 9th Year running.

Benjamin Pearce received the Shield on behalf of the excited Pack and we all returned home in excellent spirits.
