Operation Out Reach District Event

at the Quarries Camp Site, Cosgrove

Having assembled at the Headquarters to organise the transport for both Cub Scouts and equipment at 1.0pm. we arrived at the Quarries Camp Site at 1.30pm.

We all helped to set up our base on Camp Site No. 10 including wood gathering and starting a fire to boil our kettle. The ADC, Paul Swannell started proceedings by having a Flag break and then he explained to the gathered Cub Scouts what was in store for them during the afternoon. Unfortunately only 4 Packs were in attendance but with the Akela of 1st Wolverton putting on a base there would be 5 bases to visit.

The 29 Cub Scouts present were then organised into 5 mixed groups and sent off to visit the following bases in turn Problem Solving – 1st Hanslope, Cycle maintenance – Greenleys, First Aid – Stantonwood, Questions on Scouting – Gifford Park and Axe/Saw – 1st Wolverton. Despite the low numbers the older Cub Scouts for whose benefit the Event was organised for certainly entered into the spirit and gained scouting skills which would help them when they entered their respective Scout Troops.

All the teams having completed their journey around the bases were refreshed with an excellent selection of hot soup. The ADC discussed with the Cub Scouts the afternoon’s activities to see if OPERATION OUTREACH should continue and the lads agreed that all older Cub Scouts in the District should have a chance to participate in such a worthwhile District Event.

The Lowering of the flag at 4.45pm. brought the Event to a close, but as it was a wonderful sunny October afternoon 1st Hanslope played a wide game called ‘Relieving siege at the Fort’. We all helped to pack away our equipment and remove all the litter from our Campsite before returning to the Headquarters to store away the items we had taken. All Cub Scouts were returned home at 6.0pm after a very rewarding afternoon at the Quarries.
