HAVERSHAM v. CASTLETHORPE. This return game was played at Castlethorpe, on Saturday, Feb. 18, Haversham having lost the toss, had to kick against a high wind which was blowing, so that the ball made no progress, in fact, it floated into the air like a balloon, and then fell back towards the opponents’ goal at each successive kick. Notwithstanding this, Castlethorpe did not succeed in gaining a goal. In the second half, things were reversed, and the visitors being the stronger team would have scored an easy victory, but the first goal attempted was disputed, and the game came abruptly to an end, amidst much confusion, not however, before the Referee decided in favour of Haversham, one goal to nil. H. Mills and G. Saunders played well for Haversham, as did W. Worker and F. Porter for Castlethorpe. Teams: Castlethorpe, G. Rainbow, goal; G. Clifton and A. Clarke, backs; O. Hollman, W. Rainbow, and J. Wise, half-backs; W. Worker and J. Bennett, right wing; S. Gregory, and F. Spencer, left wing; W. Teagle, centre forward. Haversham, H. Gascoyne, goal; H. Mills and G. Saunders, backs; J. Ratley, L. Clarke, and J. Baugh, half-backs; T. Dytum, and C. Bavington, right wing; T. Hollis and J. Dunkley, left wing; R. Bavington, centre forward. Referee, J. Hurst; linesmen, G. Tomlinson and J. Drought.

FOOTBALL

As the football season has just commenced, it may not, we think, be inappropriate to publish the following cutting from a Sporting Paper which ahs been handed to us by an evident earnest lover of fair sport.

PLAY THE GAME

To spectators of every description we say:-

1. Read well your rules before offering criticism. Having learned them, applaud good play without favour.

2. Always respect the referee’s ruling, and don’t make idiots of yourselves by shouting yourselves hoarse after his whistle has sounded.

3. If your team gets beaten don’t use swear words to them, because it’s rude, but help them on to victory another day by encouragement.

4. Do not yell unkind things at a player because he made a mistake, or you will only make a bigger one yourself, and possibly upset him.

5. If it rains, and you have an umbrella, don’t let it drip down the man’s neck in front of you, but rather get wet yourself.

6. Support your club both away and at home, and let your rivals see your loyalty; and above all, pass through the turnstile, and don’t jump the fence.

If our readers and their friends will only follow out our instructions, what a heavenly game we shall have and what an increase there will be to be sure in the number of spectators patronising the coming matches.

CASTLETHORPE v. GAYHURST

On Saturday last a match was played between Castlethorpe and Gayhurst, at Castlethorpe, which resulted in a victory for the home team by 5 goals to nil. Bavington, as usual, played an excellent game, scoring three of the goals. Compton (left wing) and Jones (inside right) were the other scorers. A very few minutes after plat commenced Compton, by a splendid kick from the left wing, scored a goal. Jones the youngest member of the team, who will ere long make a good player, scored another. Burbidge played very well indeed, but hangs too long on the ball. The visitors played a good game, but were not successful in getting a goal. Next week Castlethorpe play Fenny Stratford Wesleyan’s away.

CASTLETHORPE v. FENNY STRATFORD
WESLEYANS.

On Saturday last Castlethorpe suffered, their first defeat of the season when playing at Fenny Stratford, the result being two goals nil. Ill-luck seemed to attend the efforts of the Castlethorpe men all through the game, time after time the ball hit the post, but they could not get it through, but there are reasonable excuses for the defeat, one being both teams playing in the same colour, which caused many mistakes. The goals that were scored were done so by the Castlethorpe men, and the ground was absolutely unfit for playing football on. When these teams meet at Castlethorpe for the return match the result will undoubtedly be visa-versa. Next week Castlethorpe play Gayhurst.

The Bucks Standard 17 November 1905

CASTLETHORPE v. FENNY STRATFORD STAR

On Saturday last Castlethorpe entertained Fenny Stratford Star in very stormy weather, rain falling at times during the progress of the match. Owing to the heavy downpour the ground was in a very greasy condition, which made good play very difficult. Play ruled very even for about half an hour, when “hands” against the visitors in the penalty area was given. Bavington was entrusted with the kick, and when just in the act of taking it he slipped, and just touched the ball, which was easily saved by the visitors custodian, and half-time arrived with nothing scored. About fifteen minutes after they resumed play, Pacey (Fenny) scored with a good shot, and a few minutes later Perry (Fenny) scored two. Castlethorpe then took play to the other end, which resulted in Bavington sending in a good shot, which quite beat the “Star” goalkeeper. The homesters were still pressing at this point, and another goal was soon added by Bavington. The game thus ended in a win for the visitors by 3 goals to 2. Mr. R. Mills was referee, and carried out his duties in a most masterly fashion. The pick of the home team were Bavington, Whiting and Ray.
Next week Castlethorpe play Hartwell at home.

CASTLETHORPE v. HARTWELL.

On Saturday last these teams played the return match at Castlethorpe. During the first half the play was very fast, the home team showing some splendid form. Soon after play commenced Bavington scored for Castlethorpe, after which Sparks (Hartwell) scored from a mis-kick. At half time the score was one goal each. The second half started well, but about ten minutes before time a penalty was given against Hartwell. Smith taking the kick, scored with it, which led to a dispute by the visitors. Some time was taken up in arguing, after which Hartwell declared, and left the field, leaving the score at 2-1 in favour of Castlethorpe. A pick of the home team could hardly be made, as each one played a magnificent game. They thoroughly deserved their win, considering the visitors had obtained some good help. Mr. R. Mills, who was referee, acted in a very able manner. Next week Castlethorpe play Hanslope.

CASTLETHORPE v. HANSLOPE

On Saturday last these teams met on the latter’s ground. The result was a win for the home team by seven goals to one. The first half was evenly contested, and at the interval the score was 2-0 for the homesters. The second half opened with rather rough play, the referee, Mr. J. Lane, giving close on a score fouls against Hanslope. Bavington scored the only goal for the visitors. Hanslope had, with the exception of one, their full league team.

BLETCHLEY ST. MARY v. CASTLETHORPE

A DRAWN GAME

On Saturday last Castlethorpe were the visitors at Bletchley in a friendly game with the St. Mary’s. A strong wind was blowing when the teams took the field as follows:- Bletchley St. Mary’s: G. Allen, W. Hankins, S. Markham, W. Sinfield, H. Goodin, M. Mead, B. Cook, J. Taylor, J. Missenden, T. Meager, and D. Collier.

Castlethorpe: J. Panter, H. Jelley, J. Lambert, F. Jones, G. May, W. Key, W. Manning, A. Burbidge, W. Lane, H. Childs, J. Smith.

The visiting captain, winning the toss, decided to kick against the wind, and from the start the visitors took the ball down, only to be driven back by the homesters’ defence. Play then followed in the visitors’ half, and after 15 minutes Collier scored. The visitors then pressed, and fine movements were spoilt by wild shooting.

Mid-field play followed, but May getting possession shot from thirty yards’ range and scored. The homesters now battled hard and five minutes fro half-time their efforts were rewarded by a finely headed goal by Collier. Half-time thus arrived with the score: St Mary’s 2 Castlethorpe 1.

The play in the second half was faster that the first, and forty minutes had passed before the visitors made the score level through Smith, who, running in from the left, made use of a pass from the right and scored. The homesters now pressed, but the visitors defended grandly until time was called, with the score: Bletchley St. Mary’s 2; Castlethorpe, 2.

The Wolverton Express 13 November 1908

STOKE GOLDINGTON v. CASTLETHORPE

VISITORS PLAY FRIENDLY, BUT LOSE.

A good match was played between the above teams at Stoke Goldington, on Saturday last. The homesters, who opened with the wind, soon had the visitors on the defensive, and in a quarter of an hour added two goals. Play now became even, each goal being visited in turn. Five minutes from half-time, however, Childs scored the visitors only goal with a fine shot. Up to half-time the visitors tried hard to equalise, but with no success, and half-time arrived with the homesters leading: Stoke Goldington 2; Castlethorpe 1.

The second half provided some very good football, the defence being master of the attack on both sides. The visitors forwards played pluckily, however, and several good shots were saved by the home goalie. The homesters then got away, and the referee gave a throw-up in the visitors goal mouth. This was, however, cleared, but the homesters still pressing, forced two corners, which came to nothing. Just before time, the homesters added to their score very luckily, the visiting goalie in clearing, kicked the ball against the left-back, from whom it rebounded into the net. This completed the scoring, and the homesters left the field lucky winners. Stoke Goldington, 3; Castlethorpe 1. Teams:

Stoke Goldington: W. West, J. Walker, E. Hill, G. Kilpin, A. Green, F. Botterill, A. Hill, A. Whiting, W. Whiting, J. Whiting, and R. Kightley.

Castlethorpe: J. Banter, T. Bowell, V. Copland, J. Lambert, A. Bavington, J. Taylor, G. May, W. Manning, H. Burbidge, H. Childs, A. Lowe.

The Wolverton Express 15 October 1909

CASTLETHORPE v. BUCKINGHAM UNITED

On Saturday last Castlethorpe entertained Buckingham United. In splendid weather the teams took the field as follows:-

Buckingham United: W. Sear, P. Butcher, E. Colegrove, J. Swain, W. Cubbage, H. Stanley, A. Bussy, V. White, H. White, G. Tirrell, and T. Tooley.

Castlethorpe: J. Panter, T. Powell, T. Herbert, G. May, A. Bavington, J. Taylor, C. Watts, W. Manning, W. Markham, A. Burbidge,, W. Compton.

The home captain winning the toss, decided to kick with the wind, and during the opening stages, the visitors goal had several narrow escapes. After ten minutes play Manning opened the scoring for the homesters. The reverse resulted in the visitors breaking away and forcing a corner, which was spoilt. From the goal kick the homesters’ left wing forced a corner, which, splendidly placed, Markham headed through. A few minutes later the home team, after splendid combination, increased their lead through Compton. The visitors appealed for offside, but it was not gained. Play then remained in mid-field until half-time arrived, with the score: Castlethorpe 3, Buckingham United, 0.

Upon resuming the visitors played better football, and several attacks were spoilt by erratic shooting. Manning then scored the forth goal for the homesters.

Directly afterwards, Cubbage, in trying to clear a shot from Burbidge, put through his own goal. From the restart Tirrell broke away and centred for White to shoot behind. Play remained in the home half until the last minute, when Compton, breaking away on the left, scored from twenty yards range with the last kick of the match. Thus an interesting game ended with homesters easy winners. Castlethorpe 6, Buckingham United).

The Wolverton Express 22 October 1909

On Saturday last Stoke Goldington were the visitors at Castlethorpe, and after an exciting game retired winners by 2 goal to 1.

Stoke Goldington: W. West, F. Bottrell, J. Walker, W. Darby, A. Green, L. Warren, A. Whiting, G. Kilpin, F. keeves, F. Bland, W. Geen.

Castlethorpe: J. Panter, F. Powell, T. Herbert, A. Lowe, A. Bavington, J. Taylor, C. Watts, W. Lansberry, F. Kerridge, W. Manning, A. Bavington.

Play in the first half was rather scrambling, owing to the wet ground. After ten minutes’ play the visitors scored through Kilpin. The homesters now played better football, and after 30 minutes’ play the visiting goalie failed to gather the ball from a free kick taken by Herbert, and Lansberry scored. A few minutes later Taylor, in trying to clear, put through his own goal. The visitors had most of the play until half-time. Stoke Goldington 2; Castlethorpe 1.

In the second half, each goalkeeper was called upon several times, but no further scoring took place, play being for the most part in mid-field. Throughout the game the visitors’ left wing were always a trouble to the home defence, for whom Herbert played well.

Bavington and Green the respective centre halves, both showed good form. The visitors, by their dashing tactics, outplayed the home team, and deserved their success.

Stoke Goldington 2 Castlethorpe 1.

The losers on Saturday next entertains Newport Unity, when a good game is expected.

The Wolverton Express 29 October 1909

CASTLETHORPE v. NEWPORT UNITY

The above game was played at Castlethorpe on Saturday last, and ended in an easy victory for the Unity.

Teams:
Castlethorpe: J. Panter, T. Powell, T. Herbert, J. Pratt, A. Bavington, J. Taylor, C. Watts, A. Lowe, C. Ruddlesdin, W. Manning, W. Compton.

Newport Unity: F. Pearce, J. Matthews, H. Daniels, A. Vicary, J. Glidewell, F. York, A. Bass, W. Bull, E. Brooks, E. Bass, W. Wicken.

Winning the toss, the Unity started with the wind, and soon had the home defence in difficulties. When the game had been in progress five minutes, Panter allowed a ground shot from Brooks to pass through his legs. The home forwards found it hard to force the game, the strong wind continually blowing the ball back. The Unity, who had missed several opportunities, increased their lead through Brooks, who scored the third goal a few minutes later. The homesters left wing now got away, and from Compton’s pass, Manning shot what appeared to be a certain goal, the ball travelling round the goalkeeper and back into play. The appeal for a goal however, was not granted. A few minutes before half-time Bull scored the visitors fourth goal. Newport Unity 4, Castlethorpe 0.

At the re-start the visitors tried long passing tactics, but found the wind a great check. The homesters, who seemed handicapped by the heavy ground, made great mistakes by not trying long shots. Bass for the visitors, tried a shot at 15 yard range and Panter should easily have cleared, but allowed the ball to bounce over his leg into goal.

Until the end the homesters continually pressed, but were unable to pierce the visitors’ defence. The Unity … upheld their unbeaten record with ease. Newport Unity 5; Castlethorpe 0.

The losers on Saturday visit Bletchley to play St. Mary’s, while Unity play Stantonbury St. Peter’s at Stantonbury.

The Wolverton Express 05 November 1909

BLETCHLEY ST. MARY’S v. CASTLETHORPE

The above teams met at Bletchley on Saturday last, and a most interesting game resulted in a win for the visitors. The opening exchanges were rather even, each team pressing in turn. The visitors right wing got away, only to be checked by Perritt. After twenty minutes play the homesters broke away on the right, and passing the ball to the left wing, saw Crane score with a fast, rising shot. A few minutes later the homesters increased their lead through Hankins. The visitors now took up the game, and until half-time the homester’s goal had many narrow escapes

Bletchley St. Mary 2, Castlethorpe 0.

The second half opened sensationally, Bavington scoring for the visitors in the first minute. From the re-start the homesters pressed, but Nichols saved at the expense of a corner. The flag kick was cleared, and the visitors forward line took the ball down for Castlethorpe to equalise. The visitors still pressed, and from a shot by Compton, which Perritt pulled down, Manning gave them the lead. The same player a few minutes later increased the visitor’s lead, and until the end the homesters never became really dangerous.

Castlethorpe 4, Bletchley St. Mary’s 2.

Teams.
Bletchley St. Mary’s : W. Perritt, W. Hankins, J. Missenden, S. Butler, H. Goodin, M. Mead, T. Tabener, W. Meredith, S. Judge, G. Hankins, R. Crane.
Castlethorpe: H. Nichols, T. Herbert, G. Meakins, A. Lowe, A. Bavington, H. Dolling, C. Watts, F. Dolling, W. Lansberry, W. Manning, W. Compton.

On Saturday next the winners visit Wicken, while the St. Mary’s play Shenley Park at Shenley.

The Wolverton Express 12 November 1909

WICKEN v. CASTLETHORPE

In splendid weather the above teams played at Wicken on Saturday last.

Teams: Wicken: W. Atkins, A. Robinson, A. Barby, H. Toombs, E. Gray, A. Warner, C. Barby, C. Tirrell, E. Read, A. Holton, D. Shakeshaft.

Castlethorpe: A. Lowe, J. Martyr, C. Harding, J. Panter, A. Bavington, W. Lickorish, C. Watts, W. Markham, W. Compton, W. Lansberry, W. Manning.

The opening stages of the game saw both teams pressing in turn, but neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled, owing to poor shooting. After a time the visitors forwards began to trouble the home defence, and several good shots were well saved by Atkins. Tirrell for the homesters, broke away on the right, and taking the ball to within 6 yards of goal, should easily have scored, but his shot went wide. From the goal kick the visiting forwards took the ball down the field, and Watts hit the upright with a terrific drive. Just before half-time Atkins was beaten by a ground shot from Compton.

Castlethorpe 1, Wicken 0.

After the interval, the visitors played with more dash, and soon increased their lead through Manning. Two more goals were soon added, Lansberry and Compton beating Atkins. The homesters now tried one or two long shots, only to find Lowe in fine form. The ball was taken back to the other end, and a pass from Lansberry enabled Manning to score the visitor’s fifth goal.

Almost on time, Tirrell, breaking away scored the homesters only goal with a fine cross shot. Result Castlethorpe 5; Wicken 1.

Both teams are at home on Saturday next, Wicken entertaining Buckingham United, and Castlethorpe meet Weston Underwood.

The Wolverton Express 19 November 1909

CASTLETHORPE v. WESTON UNDERWOOD

Castlethorpe entertained Weston Underwood on Saturday last, and a good game resulted in a win for the homesters.

From the start the homesters pressed, and after five minutes play, Watts scored with a fine cross shot. Play now became very fast, each goal being visited with lightening rapidity. Lowe tried a shot, but had the misfortune to hit the post with the goal-keeper well beaten. At the other end Harding failed to clear a shot at the first attempt , and had to lay on the ball until the whistle sounded for dangerous play. From the free kick the homesters forced a corner, but the ball was put behind. Half-time soon arrived with the homesters leading.

Castlethorpe 1, Weston Underwood 0

Midfield play occupied most of the second half, the defence of both sides being suppior in the attack. The visitor’s right wing at last got away and forced a corner. The flag kick was splendidly placed in the goal mouth, and one of the homesters handled. From the penalty kick, however, Harding saved at the expense of another corner.

The visitors still pressed, and with the home custodian out of the goal should have scored, but Martyr, rushing across, saved from under the bar. Then the homesters continued to press until the whistle brought an interesting game to a close.

Castlethorpe 2, Weston Underwood 0.

Castlethorpe: C. Harding, J. Martyr, J. Taylor, J. Panter, A. Bavington, H. Dolling, C. Watts, W. Markham, H. Burbidge, A. Lowe, and W. Manning.

On Saturday the winners journey to Stantonbury to play Unity where a good game is expected.

Mr. Bert Powell, captain of both the village football and cricket clubs, said they were very grateful to Mr. Whiting and Mr. Amos for their kindness in lending them fields in which to play and making no charge for the privilege. In some villages in the locality cricket and football was out of the question because of the price asked for the ground. He personally wished to thank Mr. Whiting and Mr. Amos for their kindness (applause).

LORD HILLINGDON had something very interesting and complimentary to say about the Northampton General Hospital when he opened Wolverton’s second annual hospital tete, on Saturday. The main feature of the fete programme was a medal football competition for local teams, gold medals being presented to the winning team by Lord Hillingdon. In the scoring, three points were awarded for a corner kick, but all goals scored counted above any number of points. The competition was under the charge of Mr. W. Fielding, who had the assistance of local referees. In the first round Newport Town beat Newport Orient, Stony Stratford Sports Club beat Cosgrove, and Stantonbury St. Peter’s accounted for Castlethorpe. Wolverton Town Reserves received a bye. In the semi-finals Stratford defeated Newport Town and Stantonbury beat Wolverton. In the last mentioned game Eric Chown, who played at inside-right for the Peter’s, sustained a simple fracture of the shin bone. Dr. J, C. Harvey was sent for and the injured player was removed by motor to the Northampton Hospital. Later in the game Gresham was ordered off. Gresham (the old Bedford player) was on month’s trial with Wolverton, his old club. The final produced an excellent contest, Stratford beating Stantonbury by 1 goal 3 corners to 1 goal 2 corners—corners counting if necessary to decide a game.
Arranged round the terracing of the park were numerous stalls and side-shows. A tennis tournament on the Park Courts. The Wolverton Town and Works Band played during the afternoon. The day’s proceeding concluded with a whist drive in the Church Institute and a dance, arranged by the Old Comrades’ Association of the Bucks Territorials, in the Territorial Drill Hall. Music was supplied by the Lyric Orchestra, and the duties of M.C. were carried out Messrs. Reg. Hill and S. McBright.

Castlethorpe mainained thier unbeaten League record last Saturday. They had the ironworkers of Deanshanger as opposition and they gave them a very hard game. Castlethorpe, however were a little superior, being quicker in making use of openings, whilst their front line combined splendidly. They won 3-2, and probably the margin against Deanshanger would have been heavier but for the excellent play of the backs and goalkeeper. Castlethorpe have now played four League matches and won all of them and are at the top of the table with eight points.

Great Linford Sports entertained Castlethorpe in a friendly game on Saturday, the proceeds being given to the National Institute for the Blind, and that deserving institution will benefit to the extent of nearly £3. The Sports played well to win by 4 - 2 as Castlethorpe had some very good players assiting them. Billy Hobbs (2) T. Atkinson and F. Dunkley scored for the home team.

Filgrave v. Castlethorpe

The above friendly match was played at Filgrave on Saturday last. The ground being very heavy the homesters could not get going. Their side was weakened by having one or two players on the sick list, but despite this bad luck they put up a good fight.
Castlethorpe went down the field almost from the kick-off and scored, but after that the homsters managed to hold them at bay.
The half-time score was 1 - 0 in favour of Castlethorpe. In the second half Filgrave tried hard to equalise but failed, the visitors breaking through and scoring again. Soon after, however, Filgrave found the net, and the game ended Castlethorpe 2 goals Filgrave 1.

Parish Council Meeting - Minutes November 08 1943

As no fire would be required and the Hall would be utilised as a dressing station for a very short time during some Saturday afternoons by the Village Football Team the Council decided to make no charge so long as the Hall was left clean and in orderly condition.
