CARRINGTON SCHOOL

Letters from Mr. Hailey of Stony Stratford about the buliding of the Carrington School

Wolverton Road
Stony Stratford
August 28 1867

Sir
There is a suggestion I wish to make relative to the windows at Castlethorpe Schools. They are all specified to be lead lights and it is this sort of window that is often used for School – but they are always open to serious objections as no matter how well the lights may be made when they are broken and have been repaired they are never after that wind and water proof. I have lately built some schools under a London Architect and there we used the couf cast plate glass which seems to do admirably. I propose therefore to use in this instance (instead of the lead lights) rolled plate glass 1/8th thick. Annexed I send you a rough sketch of the difference in the appearance. There would be no extra expense incurred and there would certainly be a gain in the increased warmth and absence of draught – which is always attendant upon lead lights when they have been up.
If you would communicate with His Lordship respecting this or could yourself give one instructions re Castlethorpe you would much oblige.

Yours Respectfully
Alfd Hailey

The rolled plate glass you are perhaps aware is obscured so that you cannot see through it (and advantage to a school) yet radiates more light than the plain.
Note Sep 16/87 That this alteration … be made

Sir
Shall I have my bricks &c cleared away from the Schools at Castlethorpe or can you kindly inform one if it is probable they will be wanted for a Boundary Wall of which I sent you a rough sketch last year – A reply will oblige.

Dear Sir
In reply to your favour I am sorry you are under a mistake about the Colouring it is not in the Contract I think you will remember meeting one in the school and your saying was the Walls and Ceiling in my Contract my answer was in the Negative
WE never undertake to Colour or paper the Walls of new buildings in the Contract as it would keep open the a/c so long to wait until they were dry – if you should be coming this way please call I would show you quantities I make the Estimate from
I am pleased to say the schools are Built of the very best Material and Workmanship my business all lies with the Gentry so I wish to do everything in the best manner
On the receipt of your letter I looked into the a/c I found my Clerk had made a mistake in the Brickwork which I never knew him to do before, I have been to Malvern for the benefit of my health for a few weeks I find the Bill was sent then so I did not see it but I have looked into it and taken off all I possibly can. The Gate etc. is rather an expensive article being of the best seasoned oak planed and stop chamfered ornamental iron work
I am Dr Sir your obedient servant
Alf Hailey
