The attractive stone-built Buckinghamshire village of Calverton with its associated hamlets of Lower, Middle and Upper Weald lies in the countryside just to the West of the new city of Milton Keynes and a mile South of the small market town of Stony Stratford. At the time of Domesday it was a significant Manor held by Hugh de Bolbec, but the roots of the religious parish go back as early as the seventh century under the missionary saint, Birinus.

The village is interesting for the way it integrates the farms and associated farm buildings in and around the more formal Manorial group which includes the Manor House, Church, School and Alms Houses. The original 1819 Rectory is located within its own walled parkland and lies immediately to the west of the village centre on the other side of a shallow valley through which runs the Calverton Brook.

The medieval form of the village, just off the well-worn route of Roman Watling Street, can still be traced from the ancient track ways and field names which made up the traditional 3-field system of agriculture. This eventually gave way to the enclosures on which the present field outlines are based but within this pattern is still preserved some of the best medieval ridge and furrow in the county.

It is also possible to infer the broad structure of economic development of the village from the form of buildings, their historic modifications and the stories of their various occupants reflecting changes of use through time.

Location: Meet at Church porch. For parking, turn right at top of Church Hill and follow signs for Church Car Park – which is a short walk back to the Church.
