The northern half of Eaglestone was designed by Ralph Erskine, one of our most famous architects, and the Twentieth Century Society recently recommended that it should be designated a Conservation Area. Come and discover why in this walk led by Tim Skelton that will also look at the rest of the gridsquare. Refreshments afterwards courtesy of the Eaglestone Residents’ Association.
Eaglestone was the last of four English developments designed by Ralph Erskine in the 1960s and 70s and was a mixture of sale and rental houses built by Bovis. It was the first time that a complete gridsquare had been offered to a single developer and 795 houses and bungalows were arranged in a series of informal “gossip groups”, separated from cars in a then fashionable “Radburn” layout. It was not a commercial success and, having built 40% of the scheme, Bovis withdrew from the agreement, leaving the rest of the gridsquare to be developed by other developers and Milton Keynes Development Corporation, all of whom responded in varying degrees to Erskine’s lead in the way that cars and pedestrians were accommodated.
The Erskine-designed area was one of the estates considered by the Twentieth Century Society in 2018 in their study of potential Post-War Conservation Areas and it was their recommendation that it should be given such a designation. Were they correct? Come and judge for yourself.
