Autumn Splendour – 2017 – Melanie Watts (Mosaic)

Organised by: Public Arts Trust, MK – Ian Michie. Chairman

A guided walk discovering eight commissioned artworks installed along the Grand Union Canal, which are related to the themes of Japanese Connections, Canal History, Fish, Fowl Insects and Invetebrates. Walk duration approximately 1 hour.

Commissioned by Great Linford Parish Council with support from The Parks Trust, Public Art Trust MK, Canal & River Trust and MK Council, the Gyosei Art Trail was created for local residents to enjoy. Completed in 2016 the trail consists of eight wonderful artworks in total. Each piece relates to the themes of Japanese connections, canal history, and natural history.

Pieces to see on the trail are Autumn Splendour by Melanie Watts – a mosaic of a beautiful white barn owl caught briefly swooping into the foliage of trees in Great Linford to capture its prey; Arachne Weaves by Linda Johns located along the Canal Boardwalk – this  takes inspiration from how a spider makes its web; Dragonfly by Ptolemy Elrington’s – is made from recovered materials; Shire Horse by Andrew Kay, a life size sculpture in steel of this powerful but calm animal; Three Post Bench by Jeremy Turner with carved relief images that all make reference to the wildlife of the canal; 7 Japanese themed enamel wall panels by Laura Boswel – inspired by birds and plants that visitors to the canal are likely to see; What lies beneath by Robb Griffith – an oak bench with relief carvings plus a giant frog and a Commemorative Plaque by Justin Tunley over the Gyosei School foundation stone.

Location: Gyosei Gardens, at the end of Sakura Walk. Note – very limited parking as a residential area. Please walk or cycle if you can, or park in the car park In Japonica Lane or the local Parks Trust car park, off Brickhill Street (charges apply).
