Organised by: Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership & Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity

We tell the story of the Marston Vale railway line engineered by Robert Stephenson and opened in 1846. It was the first railway line to reach Bedford and for much of its life serviced the vast clay workings and brickworks at Brogborough and Stewartby; later transporting much of London’s rubbish to landfill in the former clay workings. Now part of the East – West rail project to link Oxford back to Cambridge. We have a restored Victorian (1846) Booking Office together with a small display of railway related artefacts, and a vintage tea room in the former Ladies Waiting Room.

No booking required.

We do have a staff-operated wheelchair lift that will take a standard wheelchair (not a mobility scooter) or seated passenger. We also have a wheelchair that folk can transfer to if more appropriate. Please ring the doorbell to attract staff attention.

Maximum of 6 people per tour/session. The former station house is built in the Victorian Gothic Cottage OrnĂ© style and was the Station Master’s family home. You can purchase replica platform tickets as a souvenir. We also have a small gift shop onsite. We have a restored L&NWR station bench on platform 1, and Ridgmont is part of the ‘Contemplation Seats’ Art Project – details on the website.

Directions: Based at the Ridgmont Railway station on the Marston Vale (Bedford to Bletchley) rail line (approx hourly train service but no Sunday rail service). We are on the ‘old’ A507 – follow the BR double arrow logo to Ridgmont Railway Station from the A507 bypass roundabout toward the Amazon warehouse.
