TOUR OF OLNEY MARKET PLACE 1800 – 1951

The tour of the Market Place primarily covers the period 1800 to 1940 but is constantly developing to cover the period up to the mid 1970s. The original work to 1940 was compiled originally by The Olney History Workshop in the 1980’s. The Olney & District Historical Society are indebted to Elizabeth Knight for permission to publish the work on this website. The Olney History Workshop’s chosen period made use of personal memories; old photograph and newspapers; county directories and local almanacs; levy (rate) and Poor Law books and the records of local charities.

Additional data such as 1891 and 1911 Censuses, the 1910 Inland Revenue Land Survey and 1936 and 1951 Register of Electors details have since been included to substantiate and augment the earlier work. Also many historical photographs have been added, many of which were supplied by Alan Richardson to whom the Society is also indebted for his permission to include them in this tour.
