TOUR OF OLNEY MARKET PLACE 1800s – 1950s

INTRODUCTION TO THE TOUR

This tour of Olney Market Place primarily covers the period 1800s to 1950s. The original work to 1940 was compiled in the 1980’s by the Olney History Workshop. This workshop made use of personal memories, old photograph and newspapers, county directories and local almanacs, Poor Law books and the records of local charities. The Olney & District Historical Society are indebted to Elizabeth Knight for permission to reproduce the work on this website.

Data, such as entries from the 1891 and 1911 Censuses and 1936 and 1951 Register of Electors, have since been added to substantiate and augment the earlier work. Also many photographs and images have been added, several of which were supplied by Alan Richardson.
