Harts Lane, Burghclere, Newbury RG20 9JT

The Trust will visit Stanley Spencer’s Sandham Memorial at Burghclere. The Chapel, now Grade II listed, was designed by Lionel Pearson in the 1920s and built to accommodate a series of paintings by Stanley Spencer as a memorial to Willoughby Sandham who died at the end of World War I.

The visit will start with an introductory talk exploring the paintings, to be followed by a self-led walk around Burghclere village to see where Spencer lived while working on the Chapel paintings and also the parish church with its Whistler window.
