The above account Excludes the cutting of the trees and shrubs with exception of those at Aylesbury which will be bought by me to the Neptune Inn.

Estimate for planting re (as) Thornton 1853

Estimate of various pieces of ground to be Double Dug and planted with trees and shrubs all failures to be made good for three years at Thornton Hall the Seat of the Honourable R.Cavendish that are not to Exceed the following amounts and to be liable the reduction if Mr Ferguson or other competent person considers them too much.

This list was made after a dispute between the gardener and the Hon. Cavendish regarding the number of trees planted. He called in another gardener from Stowe to verify the number of trees and plants surviving. The prices are in pounds, shillings and pence. Items pencilled on the original document are here in italics. The signatures are those of the gardeners - J A Frazer being the one from Stowe.
