I am going to try to be a Lance Corporal before Christmas. Last Friday, we were short of section commanders, so the commander aked me to command one section. I had to drill them and the commander said I was very good. He said I was getting on quick. So you see, I am getting on alright and stand a good chance of rising from the ranks.
MAY: Do you see, Dad? Albert says he's coming home at Christmas.
DAD: He can see Will all proud in his khaki, then. The leading nut in the Wolverton Church Lad's Brigade.

Two KRR men were accidentally killed by bayonet fighting at Aldershot the other day. Both of them banged together. We've all been stopped fighting with the naked blade, now, and have to use our scabbards.
DAD: Once Albert gets going, that is, after he has been made a lance-corporal, he'll rise like the early morning dew. If he studies with his books, and buys a military book of some kind every week, he'll become a Major-General some day.
