EXPRESS DRIVING AXLE BROKEN.

ACCIDENT ON THE L. AND N.-W. RAILWAY.

The London and North-Western Railway Company last night issued the following account of a mishap on their system yesterday :—
About. 11.25 a.m. the 10.20 a.m. express from Euston to Liverpool. travelling near Castlethorpe, failed, the driving axle of the engine breaking, and the right hand wheel came off. The right hand intermediate wheel shed its tyre and was broken, and the coupling and connecting rods buckled.  The mishap occurred about 400 yards north of Castlethorpe Station, and subsequently the train was drawn back to Wolverton and proceeded on its journey to Liverpool at 1.43 p.m. The Rugby steam crane has proceeded to the place of the mishap, and it is anticipated the "fast " lines will he blocked until about 8 p.m., all trains taking the slow line between Bletchley and Roade.
The leading brake van suffered damage and was detached, but no passengers complained of injury, and all proceeded or their journey by the train, which, as mentioned above, left Wolverton for Liverpool at 1.43 p.m.
The permanent, way was slightly damaged.
Princess Helene Victoria was a passenger in the train, and did not reach Liverpool until about five o'clock, two and a half hours late. Although tired the Princess attended the Y.M.C.A. meeting at the Town Hall. and then proceeded by ferry to Birkenhead and Hoylake, where she fulfilled engagements, returning later to the Everton Boys’ Club at Liverpool.
