William Slater 1772
In the Name of God Amen I William Slater of Alderton in the County of Northampton yeoman being thanks be to God, of a sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last Will and testament as follows. First I humbly recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God in humble hope of acceptance through the merits of my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor herein after named and as for my temporal estate I dispose thereof as followeth. I give and devise unto my son Thomas Slater all my Real Estate whatsoever to hold to him my said son Thomas and his Heirs and Assignees for ever. Also I give and bequeath to him my said son Thomas the sum of four hundred pounds of good and lawfull Money of Great Britain to be paid in one year after my decease. Also I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Slater and my friend Samuel Smith of Paulerspury in the said County of Northampton the full and just sum of five hundred pounds of good and lawfull Money of Great Britain upon this especial Trust and Confidence that they or the survivor of them or the executors or administrators of such survivor do and shall as soon as may be after my decease place the same out at interest upon the best security that may be had or gotten for the same and the interest arising there from to pay and apply to and for the sole use and benefit of my daughter Sarah Wooden for and during her natural life Provided it shall so happen that she my said daughter Sarah shall be reduced and necessitated then my mind and will is and I do direct and order them my said Trustees and the survivor of them and the executors or administrators of such survivor to call in and pay so much of the said principal sum of five pound to her my said daughter Sarah for her further and better support and maintenance as may be thought by them the said trustees or the survivor of them or the executors or administrators of such survivor to be necessary . And upon this further trust and confidence that they my said trustees and the survivor of them and the executors or administrators of such survivor do and shall immediately after the decease of her my said daughter Sarah call in the said principal sum of five hundred pounds or so much thereof as shall remain unapplied for the purposes aforesaid and pay and apply the same into and amongst the children of her my said daughter Sarah or their legal representative in such share and proportions as they my said trustees or the survivor of them or the executor and administrators of such survivor shall think most fitting. Also I give and bequeath unto the four children of my said daughter Sarah the sum of fifty pounds of good and lawfull money to be paid into the hand of my only daughter Sarah immediately after my decease and by her to be applied for the benefit and advantage. Also I give and bequeath unto my grandson William Slater and his children the like sum of fifty pounds of like money to be paid into the hands of him my said grandson William immediately after my decease. Also I give and bequeath to my housekeeper Hannah Watson the sum of five pounds to be paid to her at my decease if she shall then be with me Provided it shall happen that my personal estate shall fall short of paying the above legacies then I direct that my son Thomas and daughter Sarah shall bear equal part therein and that the said three legacies of fifty pounds and fifty pounds and five pounds shall be fully paid without any deduction or abatement whatsoever. Also all the rest residue and remainder of my goods chattels ready money, money at interest effects and personal estate whatsoever and whensoever I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas and my said daughter Sarah to be divided and parted between them he my said son Thomas having first thereout paid all my just debts the aforesaid legacies my funeral expenses.

And the charges of proving this my Will and I make constitute and appoint my said son Thomas Slater sole executor of this my last Will and Testament. Also I do order and direct that my said trustees shall not be answerable for the misconduct the one of the other but each his own act and deed only nor for any moneys that may happen to be lost upon any insufficient security or securities unless through in willful default or neglect. Lastly I do hereby revoke all former wills by me hereto fore made. In witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament contained in two sheets of paper to the first thereof set my hand and to the last my hand and seal this eighteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy two.
Signed sealed published and declared by the above and within named Testator William Slater as for and to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence and at his request and in the presence of others have subscribed our names as Witnesses thereto
