Parish of Ashton Charities

Poor's Land
An allotment of 5½ acres, or thereabouts, was awarded to the minister, churchwardens and overseers of the poor, on the inclosure of open field lands in this parish in 1817, in lieu of some lands held immemorially for the poor. The allotment is let to John Geary, as tenant from year to year, at the rent of £6 per. annum, which is the fair annual value.
The rest of the poor's land before the inclosure, and which was about 12s. a year, was distributed among the poor. The rest of the allotment has hitherto been retained towards defraying the expenses of the inclosure, which were advanced by the tenant, and a small sum yet remains due to him on that account. `It has been agreed at a vestry meeting, that the rent, when distributable, shall be given in coals.

Lost Benefaction
The sum of £50 , which arose under a gift for the poor by Catherine Chivall and Elizabeth Chivall in 1708, has been lost many years ago, through the insolvency of a person to whom it was advanced on loan.
