19th. Century Cures dated 1859
[The following cures are not to be recommmended in the 21st century!]
Hooping Cough :
The following has proved a speedy cure. Take a wine glass of Rum and two pennyworth of spirits of turpentine, shake them well together and rub the child, by the fire, gently down the neck and chine night and morning. In a few days the cough will be cured.
Sores : In the first place wash the wound or sore well in order to clean it, then prepare a plaister of green ointment ( to be had at the Druggists ), of the size sufficient to cover the sores entirely, upon that lay about the thickness of a sixpence, or shilling the dust that is found in puff balls when they are fully ripe. After rubbing a little into the ointment lay the plaister on the sore, and let it remain thereon for nine days, in order that the seeds of the disease may be entirely destroyed; then take it off and wash the part with alum water, afterwards apply proper healing salves to perfect the cure. This with judicious management, has never been known in one single instance to fail. Puff balls ( or as they are commonly called fuze balls ) grow in Parks and pasture fields; they are generally ripe in the month of September.
