THE WINMILL FAMILY

1777 Dec 18 Richard Winmill of Hartwell married Mary Hodgskins of Ashton, Richard Winmill was a farmer, tenanting land in the centre of the village from the Duke of Grafton.
Richard and Mary had 9 children, all baptised at Hartwell Church as follows:-

1778
Apr 12 John
1782 Apr 2 Mary
1784 Nov 7 Richard
1787 Apr 15 Elizabeth
1790 Jan 31 Hannah
1792 Nov 11 Sarah
1793 Dec 29 Richard
1796 Apr 3 William
1800 Dec 25 Sarah

Sadly, only 3 of the children survived, The Burial Registers record that:-

1790
Mar 15 Richard was buried, aged about 5 ½
1792 Nov 14 Sarah was buried, aged only 3 days
1807 Jan 16 Richard was buried, aged about 13

Jan 31 Elizabeth was buried aged about 19

Feb 13 Hannah was buried aged about 17

Mar 7 John was buried, aged about 28

There were only six burials for 1807, less than the average and of which four were the offspring of Richard and Mary Winmill. The cause of death is unknown although there was a measles epidemic at Hanslope at that time which may have contributed to this.

Richard Winmill died in 1810 and in his Will dated 20 March 1810, he left his property and estate to his wife Mary and three children as follows:-

" to my daughter Mary, wife of John George, I leave £200
to my daughter Sarah, £200 to be given her when she attains the age of 21
to my son William, all that my house and malting with the land belonging in Hartwell
to my wife Mary, all the residue of my estate"

Following Richard Winmill's death, his wife Mary took over the tenancy of the farm.

William Winmill, the only son and heir married Jane Spriggs of Towcester on 7th July 1817 in a joint ceremony with his sister Sarah, who married Henry Swaker. His occupation is recorded as farmer and publican.

Between 1819 and 1831 William and Jane Winmill had seven children baptised at Hartwell. His mother Mary was buried 30th July 1832 aged 77 years. Soon after William and Jane move to Potterspury and by 1840 are to be found in Stony Stratford. In 1848 they are at Watford, Herts where they are baptised into the Church of the Latter Day Saints shortly before they emigrate to America. Sadly, within a short time of arriving they both die, possibly of cholera, on 7 October 1850 leaving a son Richard aged 9. His descendants recently made a trip back to Hartwell to see the farmhouse where the family originated from.
