WAR MEMORIALS

Hartwell has two memorials, a stone cross in the Churchyard and an oak obelisk in Forest Road.

At the end of the First World War there was considerable difference of opinion in the village concerning the type and site for a Memorial. Some were in favour of a stone cross in the Churchyard, others however wished for a wooden cenotaph to reflect the influence of Salcey Forest on the lives of the villagers. As no agreement could be reached, two memorials were erected.

The stone memorial was dedicated on Satuday 4th December 1920 by Lt Colonel Sir Hereward Wake, DSO, CMC.

The wood for the oak obelisk came from Salcey Forest, the felling being undertaken by twenty ex-servicemen, and was erected in 1920. It was replaced in 1964-5, again with oak from Salcey Forest.

The Service of Remembrance is held at the Memorial in Forest Road.

Both Memorials record the names of the men who gave their lives in both World Wars.
