John Tomes of Potterspury 1613
In the name of god Amen the Twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord god One Thousand Syxe hundred and Thirtene I John Tomes the elder of Potterspurie in the Countie of Northampton husbandman beinge sicke of bodie, yet of [a]i whole mynde and in good and perfect Remembrance prayse be geven unto god for the same, doe ordayne and make this my [testament] Conteyninge herein my Last Will, in manner and forme hereafter followeth First, I bequeath and Commend my soule into the handes of the holie blessed and undevided Trinitie, my Creator Redeemer and Sanctifier stedfastlye hopeing and verilie beleeveing That by the death and bitter passionn of my god and onlye saviour Jesus Christ I shall have free pardon and Cleere remission of all my sinnes That I shall rest agayne at the latter day, be cloathed with this my fleshe, be placed on the right hand of my mercyfull Lord and righteous Judge, and then Lyve and continewe with him in Joy for ever in yt glorious Kingdome wch he hath prepared [for me]d wth his most precious blood for me and all true and faythfull beleevers. And my bodie to be buried in the Churchyard of Pottersperie aforesayde uppon the hill syde over against the Church porch neere to the Crosse and neere to the place where my wyfe was buried Item I geve and bequeath to the mother Church of Peterborough foure pence. Item I geve to the Church of Potterspurie foure pence Item I geve and bequeath to the poore people of this parishe whoare most need ye Three shillings and foure pence to be distributed [to] them by my sonne Richard and the Vicar of Purie at their discreutetions Item I geve and bequeath to Richard Tomes the sonne of my sayd sonne Richard my Lyttle Coffer [wch is]i in one of my Chambers. Item I geve and bequeath to John Tomes the sonne of my sayd sonne Richard, in money Twelve pence All the rest of my goods moveable and unmoveable wch is but lyttle, after my the expences for the [decent]i burieing of my bodie to the earth and burriell ended I geve and bequeath to my sonne Robert Tomes whome I doe make and ordayne the executor of this my Testament and Last Will. In wytnesse thereof I have Caused [this]i my last will to be written by Paull Boughton Clerk and vicar of Purie aforesayd at my bedsted I the sayd John Tomes beinge soe weake [that]d olde and feeble. That I could not heven make my marke the day and yeare above written. Theis persons being wittnesses whose names are hereunder written. vizt:
