Relief to the amount of 4/- in money and 3/10½ in kind was ordered to be given weekly to Joseph Atkins and family of Grafton Regis on account of and during his affliction.

The following is a copy of the Medical Officer’s Certificate.

 “This is to certify that Joseph Atkins is unable to follow his employment from Rheumatism, and therefore rerquires extra support"

That our Clerk do write to Mr. Gardener Steward for the Duke of Grafton and acquaint him with the retched state in which a house occupied by James Tapp is inhabited there being no less than 4 or 5 distinct families residing in one house with but two sleeping rooms.

Advert for Master and Matron Northampton Mercury Northampton Herald. That a Master and Matron will be appointed at this Board on Thursday next. That Security will be required and that the Salary for both situations will be £50 with the usual Rations.

Mr. Nixon stated that Elizabeth Jeffcoate a Pauper in the Workhouse belonging to Stony Stratford West is a dangerous Lunatic and unfit to remain here.

Richard Jeffcoate of Stony Stratford west. Farrier to assist in maintaining his wife who is this day ordered to be confined in the Northampton Asylum she being a dangerous Lunatic.

5 November 1840

That a steel mill (price £10) be provided for the employment of the able bodied men in the Workhouse. And that John Ganderton of Wolverton End do procure it and affix it with as little delay as possible.

That the Master of this Workhouse do take Lucy Richardson to the Magistrate’s Meeting tomorrow to lie punished for refusing to work and for creating a general disturbance on Monday last.

To have a station in each Parish and to attend each station weekly (Vaccination Act)

1 April 1841

Our Clerk read to this Meeting a Letter from The Revd. Mr. Sams addressed to the Chairman in which Mr. Sams expressed a hope that the Poor of Alderton may be attended by a Medical Man from Towcester.

Ordered

That our Clerk do write to Mr. Sams and state that as the Medical Arrangements for the Union have been completed the Board cannot now comply with Mr. Sams wishes.

18 April 1841

A check for £3 15s 0d was drawn in favour of Mr. James Knott for performing 75 successful cases of vaccination at 1/- each case.

Mr. Church the Governor appeared before this Meeting and complained of the Revd. Mr. Sams the Chaplain interfering with arrangement of the Workhouse I the presence of the Paupers and thereby making them dissatisfied and stating to the aged Paupers that they ought not to be set to any kind of work .

13 May 1841

The Revd. Mr. Sams (the Chaplain) attended this Meeting pursuant to the request contained in order last Monday when it was resolved.

     That it is the desire of this Meeting that Mr. Sams should not interfere with arrangements of the Workhouse further than what his Spiritual Duties as chaplain require. And that during the performance of those duties he shall not at all be interfered with by the Master of the Workhouse.

19 August 1841

The Pauper Application heard.

Out Relief to the Amount of 2/6 weekly was granted to Hannah Satchell a Pauper belonging to Potterspury Union and residing at Grafton Regis under the Medical Officer certificate  of which the following is a copy.

     “I hereby certify that Hannah Satchell of Grafton Regis is ill unable to work and requires “Mutton Broth” and other nourishing food.

     “I hereby certify that Ann Wilcox’s infant is in a very dangerous state, consequently unfit to be removed.”

6 October 1842

Mary Ann Manning was appointed to instruct the children in this Workhouse to assist the Matron and to cut out and assist in making up the female clothing at the Salary of £15 per. annum with the usual Rations and Lodgings in the House.

Second District

Grafton Regis,  Hartwell, Ashton.

Salary to be paid for each district 2nd. District £20.

That in addition to the above Salary each Medical Officer be allowed for each case of midwifery which he shall be called to attend the Sum of 12/-. And for all Surgical Cases according to the Seale in the Poor Law Commissioners order.

That each Medical be required to attend all Paupers falling ill or requiring Medical or Surgical Aid within his District without regard to their place of Settlement to supply all necessary medicines and appliances (except Trusses) for which  he will be paid the cost price including carriage. And to comply in all respects with the Rules Orders and Regulations of the Poor Law Commissioners and Guardians respectively.

Tender of Mr. Thomas Nicholas Heygate for the 2nd District at £20 and 5/- extra cases was accepted.

9 March 1843
Mary Saunders a Pauper residing at Grafton Regis belonging to Stoke Hammond in Leighton Buzzard Union and receiving 2/6 per. week was this day allowed 1/- increase.

Mr. Thomas Heygate of Hanslope was appointed Medical Officer for the Second District for one year upon the same terms  £5  0s  0d (per.quater)

24 August 1843

Our Clerk laid before this Meeting a letter from Mansfield Union requesting that the Settlement of Frederick Bowers his wife and three children may be acknowledged and the relief confirmed. And stating that the Pauper had gained a Settlement by Hiring and Service with the Revd. Mr. Nodder who lived at Grafton Regis many years ago. 

    Resolved that the Settlement cannot be acknowledged.

18 April 1844

A letter from Chesterfield Union requesting that the Settlement of Fredrick Bower and four children now chargeable to Shirland in that Union may be acknowledged to be at Grafton Regis on Account of Hiring Service with the Revd. Nodder in 1824 1825 1826 ordered the  Settlement (being paid unknown to the Guardians) cannot be acknowledged.
