The Hearth Tax

In England, the Hearth Tax was imposed from 1662 - 1689. The records provide the name of every head of household, the place where he/she lived, and the number of fireplaces in the house. The tax was imposed twice a year. Those people who were too poor to pay were recorded as "certified for". The records which follow refer to the year 1674, which is the only one for which complete records are available for the Cleley Hundred.
