Will 1676 (Leicester)
Polwhele, Quinton, in N.D.C. 28/8/1913
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Bunning was Rector of Grafton Regis. This worthy gentleman had formally been Chaplain to Lady Crane, and on the death of Mr. Austen his predecessor, had been presented by her with the living. However he was not left for long to enjoy the fruits of his labours, for the Northampton Committee appointed by the Commonwealth, having accused him of various wrong-doings took away from him the living of Grafton Regis, and gave it to a certain Payne. The latter had been a groom to Mr. James, vicar of Fifield, at whose death he obtained a licence "to read prayers " under old Mr. Markes, Rector of Gayton, thus being much the same as a Curate. After Mr. Bunning's expulsion from his benefice he was the object of the persecution of those in power at the time, and was often in great stress. He was in Grafton House when it was defended by Sir John Digby against Major-General Skipton, and after the surrender of the small garrison the unfortunate divine was stripped of his clothes and driven as far as Alderton, a neighbouring town. Here he found protection at the hands of friends, but having again been captured he was taken back to Grafton , and once more stripped. From here in a similar way, he was driven to London, where he was imprisoned . The widow of Mr. Wilde the Rector of Ashton, also happened to be in Grafton House when it was besieged, and according to accounts, suffered somewhat at the hands of her captors until her identity was made known. |
