Incumbent
Whether rector or vicar the Incumbent was by custom the chairman of the vestry meetings but hid powers were not extensive. He was charged with keeping the parish registers, a duty still with him, and for a period he was able to recommend fit people to manage alehouses and countersign constables reports etc.
Parish Clerk
The post was a temporal one although he would normally be appointed by the Incumbent, quite frequently in earlier times, he would be in holy orders himself. A Parish Clerk arranged baptisms and communions acted as sexton, rang the bell for services and even led the responses at services.
Sexton
An official appointed and paid by the parish Incumbent or Churchwardens, He was responsible for gravedigging, bellringing and odd jobs around the church.
Vesteries
Until well into the 19th. century the most common form of local administration was the parish vestry. This could be an Open Vestry at which all ratepayers could speck and vote
Knocknobbler
A person appointed to drive dogs out of the church. Alternatively called Dog Whipper.
