Empire Day - Celebration. Major & Mrs. Lombe, the Rector, and Mrs. Annand & Master Rupert present. The Rector & Major Lombe addressed the children, who sang "The Old Flag" & waved small flags during the chorus. Mrs. Lombe hoisted the new flag & spoke a few words to the children, who then saluted the flag, & sang first verse of the National Anthem. The two eldest girls Lily Addington & Mabel Elliott then proposed cheers for the ladies & gentlemen present and lastly for "the Governors & the Teachers". |

A frightful thunderstorm came on just as the Alderton children & other far-comers were starting to school- Some on their way were fetched back by parents. Mrs. D. Annand & Mrs. A. Annand visited the school this morning to see the gifts of vegetables & fruit, which the children have contributed & are sending to the wounded soldiers in Northampton hospital. The gift consists of 1 large sack of potatoes, 1 sack of carrots, parsnips, & turnips, about 3 bushels of apples with celery, onions, beetroot, cabbage, & a few pears. As most of the children are far-comers, they have carried heavy baskets containing above, over a mile, & and quite enjoyed "doing their bit" for the poor soldiers. Mess. Phipps & Co. kindly conveyed hampers & packs to Northampton on their motor lorry. |
