28 High Street in the early 20th century (from the collection of the late Ruth Hall, MBE)

Organised by: Winslow History Project

The Maydon family owned the site for many generations and eventually built themselves “an excellent brick and tiled residence”. In 1885 T.P. Willis, who lived next door at The Elms, bought the house and turned it into offices. He and his clerks carried out the business of Winslow Rural District Council, the Board of Guardians and the Winslow New Gas Company. You will be able to find out more about the building in the time of Mr Willis, and the scandal which followed his death in 1909.

Later 28 High Street was the offices of Winslow Rural District Council and then, after reorganisation in 1974, Aylesbury Vale District Council. It was also used by the Buckingham Area Guardians, the Ministry of Food and the “War Ag”, and it housed Winslow’s first public library.

It now belongs to Winslow Town Council, who hold their meetings in it, have an office open to the public, and are refurbishing some of the rooms for public use.

Access: Partial wheelchair access. Parking on Winslow Market Square or Greyhound Lane and Public Hall Car Parks.
