Opening ceremony of the Scouts and Guides Headquarters, early 1950s

Organised by: Winslow Girlguiding

Our hall was built in 1865 by local subscription “for the education of children and adults, or children only of the labouring, manufacturing and other poorer classes”. It became redundant as a school in 1901 but continued to be used as a meeting place for local events until it was purchased by the 1st Winslow Company of Girl Guides in 1958. For the past 60 years the school has been used on a weekly basis by girls and young women in Girlguiding and currently has Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers in residence.

The hall is located in the heart of Winslow’s conservation area and will give you an idea of educational facilities at the end of the 19th century. The lobby is largely intact with the original coat hooks and doors. It has high perpendicular style windows and the original boiler guard. There will also be a display of Girlguiding in Winslow over the last 60 years.

Refreshments will be on sale including homemade cakes, scones, teas and coffees. All proceeds will go to the hall’s refurbishment fund.

Opened in conjuction with Keach’s Meeting House and 28 High Street (Winslow Town Council offices).

Pre booking not required.

Access: Two steps to the entrance. Not suitable for wheelchairs.
Unisex toilets, refreshments, limited indoor parking for bicycles (parking at owner’s risk), well behaved dogs welcome at discretion of organisers.

Location: Access by foot from Church Walk or Horn Street.
