SHS again sponsored the annual village Scarecrow Competition. This year the scarecrows were on display from 16 to 23 June and the judge was Ray Bailey. The winners were:
1st: ‘Goliath’ – Ryan Tanner, High Street
2nd: ‘Mr Just Learning’ – Joshua Temple, Perry Lane
3rd: ‘Spud’ – Jess Line, Crofts End
To publicise the competition, Jess Line put a model of Antony Gormley’s famous “Angel of the North” statue in a prominent position in the field next to the road that runs from Sherington Bridge to Chicheley, where it was seen by a passing Geordie. This prompted an article in the Newcastle Sunday Sun on 24 June under the headline “Angel Scarecrow of the South”.
