Historic Towcester - Buildings marked with Plaques

Towcester and District Local History Society decided at the start of the year 2000 to see if plaques could be erected to identify the important historic buildings in Towcester. It took two years hard work to obtain all the necessary permissions for the first six plaques.

The project was supported by a grant of £1,903 from South Northamptonshire Council, and the rest of the cost was paid for by the Society.

The first six plaques were installed in spring 2002 and the launch ceremony was held on 27th March 2002 at the Chantry House in the presence of the Chief Guest, Carenza Lewis of the Channel 4 archaeological TV programme "The Time Team", the Mayor and Mayoress,Town and County Councillors, Towcester Museum Trust members, planners, local press, TV and radio and a representative from each of the six buildings.

In April 2020 the Towcester Town Council agreed to take over responsibility for the Millennium Project signs. As the plaques were looking worse for wear the council had them refurbished, re-enamelled, and the lettering gilded with gold leaf.
