armorial glass no. 6
No.6 is quarterly 1 and 4 the first Ingleton achievement; 2 and 3 the second Ingleton achievement.

No.1 achievement is "argent a chevron sable between three tar barrels sable flames issuant proper therefrom", the barrels are banded Or. This is the achievement of Ingleton. Robert Ingleton, lawyer and Chancellor of the Exchequor for Northamptonshire and Rutland to Edward IV, aquired the manor and advowson of Thornton in 1464. Robert died in 1472 having married three times and leaving six sons and ten daughters.

No.2 achievement is "Argent crusilly-fitchee azure with three griffins' heads".

The funeral brass of Robert Ingleton in Thornton Church shows a shield quarterly 1 and 3 Ingleton; 2 and 4 "Three griffins' heads erased". The second coat of Ingleton does not appear to have an explanation except that in Tudor times the heralds gave second achievements to persons already entitled to one.
