In the name of God Amen this instantt ffridaie beinge the xxviijth daie of October in the eighteenth yeare of the reigne of our soveigne ladie Quene Elizabethe of England ffrance and Ireland Defender of the faith I William Smythe als Buffeton of Yardlie gubbyn in the paryshe of Potterspury als Estpurie in the Countie of Northampton husbandman beinge sicke in bodie but perfect of memorie thanks be unto god for it Doe make this my Last will and Testament in manner and forme followinge, ffirst I bequethe my soule to almightie god, and my bodie to be buried in the Churchyard of Potterspurie aforesaid Item I geve to the repaire of the saide Churche and the bells therein iijs iiijd, Also I geve to the poore mens boxxe of the same parishe xijd and viijd a yeare to be geven to vij poore persons yearlie on good fridaie duringe the terme that my heres endure accordinge to my ffathers will, Also I geve to William my Sonne my howse in Yardley gubbyn with all the lands and all other the appurtenances therto belonginge or in any wise apperteynynge to him and to his heries lawfullie begotten for ever And if he happen to die without heires then to remaine to Richard my sonne and his heries, and yf he have no heries then to Margaret my daughter and for her heires, And if it happen all my foresaid children to depart the world without heires that then the foresaid my Tenement with all other thapptunances thereto belonginge to remayne to my two sisters Jane and Margerie and to ther heries equallie to be devided, And if that they my sisters dye without issue, that then my saide howse with thappurtances to remayne to the towne of Yardley gubben to be devided in three equall portions that is to saie one parte to the repaire of the Church the second parte to helpe the poore people of the saide parishe against all taskes and tallage, and the third parte I doe geve to mend the highe waies abowte the towne and parishe aforesaide, Also I geve to William my sonne one olde Cupborde my ploughe and best shooed carte with all the implements to them belonginge my graie bodie mare the blacke mare and the white gueldinge a blacke Cowe a blacke herfor with calffe a redd cowe and the table in the hall as it standeth with the forme the greatest panne of brasse and the great brasse potte two pairs and a halffe of sheets a mattres a coverledd iiij Loodes of wooded to be bought and Laide in the yarde a pillowe and a bolster, the third parte of the boardes about the grounde a beddestede a Coffar a paire of newe harrows. A troughe iij peans of pewtar his third parte in the kettles, Also I geve to my son Richard one olde cupborde a great redde pyde Cowe a blacke heckfar with a highe heade, a blacke weynynge calffe with a tagged taile a wether sheepe my graie foremare the share the coulter and other implements about the olde ploughe all the olde June strakes about the howse with all the other olde yrne, the thirde pott of brasse his parte in the kettles his parte in the boardes and iiij Loodes of wooded or iiijs for everie Loade a Coffar a troughe a bedstead iij paire of sheets a coverledd a blanckett a bolster a pyllowe a pyllowe beare ij table napkins one Roode of whete his parte in the pewtar, Also I geve him a quarter of barley and halffe a quarter of wheate to be paide him yearelie duringe the term of my brother William Parratts lease of Hansloppe, also I geve him vlxs in money. Also I geve to Margret my daughter a blacke pyde Cowe a blacke sturred herkfarr a blacke pide calffe a greate graie mare ij wether shepe the second greate panne the seconde brasse pott a possenett a troughe the best Cupborde iij peeces of Pewtar a chafingdishe ij Candles stickes of the woort the redde Coffar her parte in the boardes, the Best coverledd a blanckett a newe mattresse iij paire of sheets iiij Loodes of wodd or ells iiijs for everie Lode the third parte of all the pullen about the yarde ij olde geese one younge goose and a gandar one Roode of the best whete and xls in money her third parte in the kettles Item I geve her one quarter of Barlie and halffe a quarter of wheate to be paide yearlie to her duringe the terme of my brother William Parrats Lease of Hansloppe, and the paiment of the saide Barley and whete to begynn betwene this and Candlemas next remaynge after the date hereof and so yearlie after duringe the same terme, Also I geve her ij Graie sowe pyge hoggs, The rest of the hoggs pullen and geese to be devided equally betwext my two sonns William and Richard, Also I will that my pease upon the hovel be praised and equally devided betwixt my saide children Richard and Margret Item I geve to my cozen Jone Lumbard a redde heckfar with calffe and xs in money and to my sister Jone a brinded herkfar, the rest of the pease in the barne to remaineth with the other Corne in the barne, towards the sowinge of the Cropp, and my will is that my sonne William or any other of my saide children whome god shall call to be my heire to enter of the aforesaide tenement with thapputenences readie sowen with all kynde of graine accordinge to the former usuall custome at the age of xxi yeares And that it maie be so done as is aforesaide I do commit my two saide sonnes William and Richard into the handes of my brother William Parrat of Hanslope with their former stocks or bequeathes and all the Corne in the barne with the dedes of my howse, and all other my writings, and he to kepe them and their bequeathes until thaige of xxj yeares, and then to delyver all theire bequethe or stocks accordinge to the tenure and true meaninge of this my will, Also I doe commytte my daughter Margrett into the handes of my brother Lucas Parrat of Wellingborowe with her stocke to be kept and delivered to her again at thaige of xviij yeares And if it happen any of my saide children to depart the world before they receive their former stocks that then the bequethes of him them or her so departed to remayne equallye devided to them him or her of my children that remaine and are lefte alyve, The rest of all my goods unbequeathed my debts beinge paide my funerals and all other charges discharged I will them to be prised and equally devided betwext my three said children savinge the haiecocke in the yarde that not to be prised above xxs, and the xxs to be equallye devided betwene my saide three children, but the Cocke of haie to remaine in the handes of my brother William Parratt of Hanslope, and he to see my said Tenement sufficientlie kept in repaire duringe the terme that my saide children be at the age within named Also I doe make and constitute my brother Lucas Parrat of Wellingboroughe and my brother William Parrat of Hanslope executors of this my Last will and testament, to execute fulfil and kepe all this my will as within named accordinge to the tenure and true meaninge thereof And I doe desire my neighbours Nicholas churche and Richard Goodman of Brodwater to be oversears of this my Last Will and Testament to se it performed as within said and I geve them for their paines xijd a pece, and I geve to Sir Thomas Saxbie curat of Potterspurie for makinge this my will and other writings xviijd, In witness hereof I have setto my hande and seale the daie and yeare within named and in 1576 witnes Thomas Saxbie minister Nicholas Church and Richard Goodman with others
