MEMORIES OF BLETCHLEY ROAD INFANTS' AND GIRLS' SCHOOLS

My School Days by Gladys Scott (formerly Mrs Powell)

When I first started the Bletchley Road infants school it was based in the buildings that now front Queensway nearest to St Martin's Hall and is known as the Knowles Infant School. Our classes were mixed both boys and girls and I remember we sat in a square.

I recall all of the teachers were ladies including two sisters called Miss Lane, another nice teacher was Miss Bramley and there was also a Miss Gascoigne.

Our Headmistress was called Miss Haring who was very strict but firm, another teacher called Miss Boys was also strict, Miss Moore had short-cropped hair and our music teacher was Miss Bowler. Mr Clarke was the caretaker who lived in the caretaker’s house next to the infants school.

There used to be a man who would go looking for truants on his bike. He used to ride around town and if he spotted any children that should have been at school, he would bring them back to school and they would be in trouble. He also checked up on the ones who hadn’t attended for a while who were off sick.

I used to live in High Street Fenny Stratford and would have to walk home at dinnertime, as there were no meals at school, there wasn’t any milk given either.

I can remember going on a nature study walk with the school to, what looked like, a pond in the corner of a field. If you misbehaved in class you used to get the ruler from Miss Boys. We didn’t have toilets inside, we used to have to go outside to a block in the playground.

After the infants school I went for a short time to the Girls School which was the building that looks onto the Rec. I then went onto Cedars in Leighton Buzzard
