BLETCHLEY ROAD INFANT SCHOOL

Childhood Friendships of Phyllis Moyes (nee Baker) from Bletchley

Mrs Moyes writes about the lifelong friendships made in childhood and ‘Don’, of whom she speaks, belongs to the well-known Burridge family of Bletchley.

"My first memory of Don is playing at my house. We must have been quite small as we were both sitting under the dining table.

The photograph above shows us both on the mat (front right) at Bletchley Road Infants’ School, which is still there at the back of our house, where I still live. Don’s parents lived almost opposite to my parents. Our fathers were railway workers. My father was a Steam Engine driver and I think Don’s dad worked at the other end of the train as a guard, or he might have worked in the signal box - you will have to ask Don.

As we grew up, we went to different schools and eventually to work. I remember Don and his brothers in the Boys’ Brigade at Spurgeon Baptist Church. I had a relation who sang in the choir there, so I occasionally went to performances of Messiah and other concerts and choral events.

Dorothy came to work in Bletchley and lived, I think, with the Haddon family. One daughter, Mrs Corden is still living locally and if I meet her, Don and Dorothy are always mentioned in catching up with the news.

Having set up home elsewhere in Bletchley after their marriage, Don and Dorothy eventually came to live back in Leon Avenue as close neighbours to me. I had married Bill and we lived in my parents’ house.

So life went full circle, our children went to the school that Don and I had attended and Dorothy and I shared collecting them from nursery school. Diane and my daughter Carol were of similar age and were playmates.

We were all quite sad when they emigrated and have been pleased to keep in touch and have visits from them when they have returned briefly to England."
