Richard Maltby gained employment at Wolverton Works after having completing an apprenticeship in cabinet making in Lancaster. As there was little work in Lancaster, his uncle who was already working in Wolverton Works asked Mr. Pervis if employment could be found for him. Richard travelled to Wolverton where he was interviewed and immediately engaged as a charge hand in the finishing shop. Richard lodged in Castlethorpe with a relative and later brought his wife Nelly to live in Pretoria Terrace where they remained for the rest of their lives and where they brought up there four daughters. Nelly Maltby had been an upholsterer working on bassinets before her marriage. Some years after she had moved to Castlethorpe Nelly helped Mr. Edward Powell run the shop next to the Carrington Arms, where they sold groceries etc. In about 1923 Nelly took over the running of the shop.
