Pack Visit to Bell Ringing at Hanslope Church

We held a shortened Pack Meeting so that we could walk to the Church to meet Mr. Roy Keeves at 7.0pm. Mr. Keeves is the Leader of the Ringers at Hanslope Church and explained to the Cub Scouts about the history and art of this skill.

Mr. Keeves had previously prepared the largest of the eight bell set so that we could take it in turns to climb further up the tower to see the tenor bell being rung. We all found the steps very tricky but fortunately no mishaps occurred even with one party ascending and another one descending.

We all arranged ourselves around the ringing room to observe the bell ringers practising, being careful not to get in the way and distracting the ringers’ concentration. Fortunately Russell was saved from being the first hanging victim in Hanslope Church Tower by a quick witted ringer as he nearly put his head in the rope of one of the bells.

Thanking Mr. Keeves and the rest of the ringers for a very enlightening evening we all made our way to the foot of the Tower for an 8pm. dismissal to awaiting Parents. We all agreed that it had been a very rewarding visit and pleased that the numbers in the party at the end were the same as when we started.
