Ramble around Thornborough

We met at 8.45am. to organise the party and transport. Arriving at Thornborough Bridge on the A421 we parked the cars and prepared for the 4½ mile ramble on a way marked route. The morning was bright but cold so a steady pace was requested. On the ramble we came across many interesting features with views across the river valley to Buckingham in the distance.

Part of the walk took us along the now disused Buckingham Arm Canal and the old lock could be clearly seen but without the actual lock gates. Walking along the Great Ouse we came across two swans but we made sure we did not disturb them. We frequently referred to the maps we had brought with us to verify the walk and also to indulge in some map reading work. Having reached Thornborough Mill, which was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, we dallied awhile to inspect the water wheel.

On the return leg to the village of Thronborough it started to rain so we stopped to put our rainwear on. The rain persisted until we neared the cars but not before we had climbed one of the two Thornborough Mounds which according to the leaflet were Roman burial mounds.

We had enjoyed a most interesting ramble around Thornborough despite the rain interfering on the last stage and we returned to the Headquarters at 12.20pm.
