St. George’s Day Parade Central Milton Keynes

This year the District joined forces with Milton Keynes South District together with Guides and Brownies from Milton Keynes and the venue was Central Milton Keynes. The rehearsals for the Flag Bearers and escorts had taken place on Wednesday April 19th but unfortunately full rehearsal could not be undertaken because an Exhibition was being held in Middleton Hall.

The Cub Scouts, Scouts, Leaders and Parents met at the Headquarters at 1.0pm to organise transport to the Civic Offices where the Parade was to be lined up. Having found our position we prepared for the march to Middleton Hall at 2.25pm. The Troop < led the Group followed by the Pack and followed by 1st Castlethorpe and Hanslope Guides and Brownies.

Instead of marching up the main road we walked and paused up Midsummer Arcade owing to the onlookers obstructing and the low ceilings causing problems to the Flag Bearers. Reaching Middleton Hall we participated in the Service which owing to lack of chairs, microphone trouble and the area itself was not really condusive to a rewarding service.

When the service had come to an end some confusion arose on whether we were to march back to the Civic Offices. Once our Group Scout Leader had found our Flag Bearers and Escorts he decided that the 1st Hanslope Group would curtail any further proceedings in the Event. Thus we all made our way back to the Civic Offices and returned to the Headquarters at 4.30pm.

Although the Group Leaders were very pleased with the turn out of the Groups Cub Scouts and scouts, both in standard of uniform and numbers, we were very disappointed in the actual Parade. Unfortunately because of the poor organisation and planning a wonderful opportunity to “show off” Scouting and Guiding in Milton Keynes was lost.
